PART 1-

CHANGING YOUR PERCEPTION OF WEIGHT LOSS

The first stage of this process is absolutely crucial to your success, because without this stage weight cycling will continue to occur.

It’s time to change your perception of weight loss.

Most people’s perception of losing weight is developed from the information they have received from the weight management/diet industry, which is based upon the management of ‘physical weight’, which is achieved by implementing various strategies (depending on the business) that all have one scientific model at the core- the CICO model (calories in calories out).

This means that all plans for weight loss have that model as their foundational core, with the reduction of physical weight as their primary focus, which makes them ‘diet-led’ systems.

In science terms the management of reducing physical weight  reduce a person’s caloric intake, add extra movement to adjust the number of calories expended which creates a deficit which then promotes fat loss.

And this has been the industry’s chosen model of weight loss since the 1970’s.

**** Now I’m not saying the model has remained the same since then. Yes it has evolved looks and now comes in various forms, but the core model has remained the same- using the CICO model to manage weight.

This model is then re-packaged by businesses to be ‘their own’, but fundamentally each plan has the exact same foundational core- the CICO model.

And for over fifty years this has consistently been the industry’s go-to model for weight loss, and to be fair, the fact that the weight loss industry has become a multi-billion pound industry using this model, but that doesn’t mean it is the right model. It just means that it is the ONLY model that has been commercially used.

PROOF IT DOES NOT WORK FOR MOST-

The current diet industry is flooded with Slimming club leaders, Personal Trainers and weight loss coaches using this model, so there are more than enough experts to be helping the masses and making improvements.

And the need for it is evident, with the diet industry’s current worth being valued at a staggering £60 billion per year with 45% of the global population actively trying to lose weight.

Yet even with the vast amount of coaches/experts available, and the huge percentage of people accessing the options available in their bid to lose weight, our obesity statistics still continue to rise every year. Yet oddly as the net worth of the diet industry increases each year, so do the statistics for obesity with the world now being in a global health crisis due to an obesity epidemic.

So as you can clearly see, the maths ain’t mathing here!

Clinical studies by the World Health Organisation state that diet-led plans built around the CICO model (slimming groups/commercial meal plans/meal replacement shakes/personalised diet plans) have a 80-95% failure rate, with any weight loss being regained within 1-2 years.

NINETY FIVE PERCENT!!!

And what’s really interesting and eye-opening is that reports also indicate that the highest percentage of revenue earned by these businesses is earned through repeat return custom.

That is a huge and undeniable number of people that are failing to achieve their goals the first time round, but yet continue to go back over and over again in the hope that next time it might work.

But the reality here is that the only real success stories are the businesses delivering the model, and for 80-95% of the users, the ONLY pounds that will ever permanently be lost are from the wallet, and not the waist.

And before the ‘slimmers of the year’ come for me to argue their point that it works for them, I’m not saying it doesn’t work for everyone. Clearly there are success stories as approx 20% of participants do succeed long-term.

But the failure rate far outweighs the success rate. And the biggest issue I have encountered during my mission to help people break their diet mentality is the belief that ‘it does work for them all the time they stick to the plan’. Because the reasons most people “fall off the wagon” are emotional/behavioral and none of these businesses are designed to address and change those things, so it is literally impossible to ever stick to the plan long-term.

 and that is to change your perception of weight loss, to better understand how you can achieve your goal.

When it comes to the weight loss process there is one colossal mistake that is made which has been prevalent (yet overlooked) for years, and this mistake has prevented so many people from achieving their weight loss goals, and that mistake is not understanding that there are two different categories of people when it comes to weight loss, and correctly identifying the category you fall into.

Failing to recognise this fact has meant that for years your perception of weight loss has been distorted, and your approach has been completely wrong which has led to you consistently failing in your attempts to succeed, no matter how much time, effort and money you invested.

But you aren’t alone! Statistics from the World Health Organisation show that there are currently approximately 4,173 billion people in the world currently trying to lose weight. That’s 52% of the entire global population, with only 20% of those people succeeding long-term.

That means that 80% of people desperately trying to lose weight are failing, and this is because they are not correctly identifying the weight management category that hey fall into, and as a result of that, not using the correct weight loss system.

weight management categories, and the systems required for each one.

CATEGORY 1- CAUSATION OF UNWANTED WEIGHT-  DIETARY ISSUES

People in this category tend to find that they have struggled to manage their weight due to ‘circumstantial dietary’ issues.

In layman’s terms, the main reasons they tend to struggle with managing their weight is rooted within circumstantial/lifestyle factors.

Factor’s such as-

*Poor portion control (habitual overindulgence

* Limited mobility due to work/lifestyle

* External/circumstantial stress triggers.

* Complacency/contentment

* Busy schedule

*Regular consumption of  processed foods

People in this category tend to find that they rarely struggle with  emotional attachments to food or display disordered/compulsive eating issues. They manage to regulate their emotions for the most part, and lack the presence of psychological blocks and patterns of self-sabotage when trying to make changes to their lifestyle.

For the most part, the biggest issue is not managing their lifestyle/diet effectively, which has caused them to develop superficial unhealthy habits out of  convenience, making their weight circumstantial and not emotional/behavioral.

CATEGORY 1- WEIGHT LOSS SOLUTION-

For this particular group of people their solution is diet-led.

Their primary focus for losing weight is required to be making dietary and lifestyle changes such as-

  • Adapting eating habits
  • Managing stress
  • Improving sleep
  • Increasing mobility
  • Structured eating routines
  • Portion control
  • Mindfulness

Diet plans, commercial slimming groups, meal replacement plans and personalised nutrition/fitness plans are proven to work effectively for this particular category of people.

CATEGORY 2- CAUSATION OF UNWANTED WEIGHT- OBSTRUCTIVE EMOTIONAL WEIGHT (OEW).

People in this category tend to find that they have struggled to manage their weight due to deep rooted emotional and behavioural issues that have caused Obstructive Emotional Weight (OEW).

Obstructive Emotional Weight is a psychological impairment that means that there are emotional and behavioral issues present such as-

* Unresolved Emotions/trauma

* Contradictory beliefs

* Toxic food language

* Inconsistent behavior

* A limiting self-image

* Emotional avoidance

Which has created intrusive emotional weight/baggage that blocks/prevents long-term weight loss success.

HOW TO IDENTIFY IF YOU HAVE OEW-

Do you have a history of-

* Habitual weight cycling (constantly losing and regaining weight)

* Disordered eating patterns (including cycles of binge-eating/starvation)

* Emotional eating episodes

* Chronic food noise

* Irrational and impulsive behavior around food (a lack of self-control)

* Uncontrollable cravings

* Self-medicating with food (comfort eating)

* Inconsistency with eating routines

* Self-sabotage

* An ‘all of nothing’ mentality

then you will have obstructive emotional weight present, and unlike those in category 1, the ONLY  way permanent weight loss success can be achieved is to first target and lose the emotional weight, and then the unwanted body weight is lost as a by-product.  Because sadly, all of the time the emotional weight remains unresolved the unwanted physical weight will remain too.

CATEGORY 2- WEIGHT LOSS SOLUTION-

Although for years you have been led to believe that the solution for weight loss was to focus on diet and lifestyle,  the solution you need is actually behaviour led instead, which is where changing your perception of weight loss is so crucial.

CONSEQUENCE VS CAUSE-

The perception shift for weight loss that needs to occur requires you to fully understand why you have yet to succeed, and what you must now do in order to break through.

The truth is that your weight issues are not caused by ‘what you eat’, but instead caused by ‘why you eat’, so you are required to take a completely different approach to weight loss to the one you have been using, because that diet-led approach purely focuses and modifies what you eat (which is a consequence), instead of modifying why you eat (which is the real cause of your weight issues) which is why you continuously end up back at square one, no matter how hard you try.

But don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting that the diet-led approach you have used before can’t help you to lose weight initially, as I’m sure you have experienced losses with it already, but there is a reason why you have never have maintained them, and that is because only the consequence has been modified, and the cause remained the same, so inevitably consequential habits/patterns and behaviour issues re-emerge again, causing any weight that had been lost to frustratingly be regained again.

And the reason why this is a prominent issue that occurs time and time again for so many, is because their ‘go-to’ approach of commercial systems (diet-led plans and slimming groups) are not designed or equipped to offer emotional/behavioral resolutions/modifications to the deep-rooted emotional and behavioral issues present. And the outcome of those issues being overlooked/unresolved is constant weight cycling (losing and regaining weight) which leads to feelings of disappointment, shame and frustration whilst feeling incapable/inadequate.

And all of those feelings are a killer of motivation and focus, and lead to lapses in judgement and self-control.

All the time you are using the wrong system for you,  you will receive the same predictable outcome of failure, because the core issues still remain.

In order for Group 2 to successfully lose weight long-term they are required to-

1 – Remove or reframe false beliefs

2 – Alter self-perception

3 – Change inner dialogue

4 – Improve emotional regulation

5 – Reduce food noise

6 – Manage stress effectively

7 – Balance hormones

8- Re-develop the understanding of nutrition

9 – Understand movement

10 – Improve environmental factors

Which this system is designed to achieve.

Once you can clearly identify the group you fall into, you can start to use the right weight loss system for you.

OEW is the cause of your unwanted physical weight, and food (your eating habits) are a consequence of it.

And by dieting you are only targeting the consequence (food) as a primary focus and not the cause (OEW), which is why you continuously end up back at square one, no matter how hard you try.

Now don’t get me wrong, a diet-led approach can achieve weight loss initially, and I’m sure you have experienced losses with it, but never maintained them.

That’s because the results achieved will sadly only ever be short-lived, because only the consequence has been modified, and the cause remains the same.

And so inevitably old habits/patterns re-emerge, with any weight that had been lost so far, frustratingly being regained again.

Have you invested countless amounts of time, money and effort into your weight loss journey, but you have yet to achieve your goal and maintain those results?

Do you suffer from these weight related issues-

  • Lack of self-control.
  • Chronic food noise.
  • Emotional attachments to food.
  • Compulsive eating.
  • Emotional dysregulation.
  • Poor self-image.
  • Low motivation.
  • Food cravings.
  • Excessive appetite.

If so then the reality is that no amount of dieting, macro tracking, meal replacement plans, fasting, PT sessions or slimming groups will ever help you to lose weight, because the issues that have caused your unwanted weight  are behaviour led and not food-led, so the solution needs to be behaviour led too.

Now I’m not suggesting for one minute that the diet-led approach doesn’t work at all. It works for people that tend to struggle with managing their weight due to  circumstantial issues. Issues such as lifestyle, routine/structure, limited time, circumstantial stress, social weekend indulgences. Issues that are easily amenable as they aren’t deep-seated in  emotional attachments to food, disordered eating issues or problems with emotional regulation. Those are the 20% that do succeed with this system.

But those with emotional and behavioural issues with food, behaviour and self-age will remain in the 80% failure category using this approach will remain in that category indefinitely, because
 all of the time they continue to repeatedly use the above weight loss systems they are not only preventing themselves from breaking through their weight loss resistance state, but they are firmly reinforcing it instead, making long-term success even less of a possibility with every time that they restart their weight loss journey.

But you are not alone, and the biggest issue here is the weight loss diet industry itself.

The weight loss diet and weight management industry has exposentially grown over the last 10 years, and is forecast to rise and be worth £42.66 billion by 2029 making it one of the biggest global markets.

And with viral trends, an increase in new coaching businesses and new diets being promoted, it it should be an industry that is making significant progress in overcoming the obesity epidemic we are in, however the truth is that even though the market value of the industry increases, the success rates NEVER do, with studies showing that statistically 80% of people that access the weight loss industry fail to achieve long-term success.

EIGHTY PERCENT!! That is a colossal amount of people trusting an industry that does not deliver!!

And those numbers undeniably prove that the only real success stories here are the businesses profiting from the failure of those in need.

But why are the failure rates so high?

Studies by the World Health Organisation show that over 65% of people struggling to manage their weight have medical weight-related issues or behavioural weight-related issues, and a diet-led approach is proven to not work for that category of people, and instead a medical or behaviour modification-led approach is required instead.

And yet even with these findings, those people are still given false promises and hope by the diet industry that they can lose weight this way, because that trust supports their financial gain.
